What Is a QR Code? The Complete Guide for 2026

Learn what QR codes are, how they work, and the 9 types you can create for free. Simple explanations with practical examples.

A QR code is a scannable square pattern that stores data: a URL, WiFi password, contact card, or plain text. Your phone camera reads it in under a second.

How It Works

  • Finder patterns (three big corner squares) tell the camera which way the code faces. Scan from any angle.
  • Modules (the black and white squares) carry the actual data in binary: black = 1, white = 0.
  • Error correction adds redundant data so the code still works even if part of it is damaged or covered by a logo. Four levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), H (30%).

How to Scan

  1. iPhone (iOS 11+): Open Camera, point at the code, tap the banner that appears.
  2. Android (9+): Open Camera or Google Lens, point at the code, tap the link.
  3. Older phones: Install Google Lens (free on iOS and Android).

No extra app needed on any phone made after 2017.

Good to Know

  • Do QR codes expire? Static codes never expire. The data is baked into the pattern itself.

  • Are they safe to scan? The code is just data. It cannot install malware. Check the URL your phone shows before tapping, same as any link.

  • How much data fits? Up to 7,089 numbers or 4,296 text characters. Keep it short for faster, more reliable scans.

  • Can I edit one after creating it? Not a static code. You need to generate a new one if the content changes.

  • Do they work offline? Text and WiFi codes work without internet. URL codes need a connection to load the page.
