A WiFi QR code encodes your network name, password, and security type in a standard format that phones recognize automatically. Scanning it connects the device to your network without typing anything. Here is what happens behind the scenes and how to set it up correctly.
WiFi QR Code Format Explained
WiFi QR codes use a specific text format that mobile operating systems recognize: WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourNetworkName;P:YourPassword;;. The T field specifies the security type (WPA, WEP, or nopass for open networks). The S field is the network SSID (the name that appears in WiFi settings). The P field is the password. Two semicolons mark the end. There is also an optional H field: H:true means the network is hidden and does not broadcast its SSID. iOS has supported this format natively since iOS 11, and Android since version 10. Older devices needed a third-party QR scanner app. When a phone reads this format, it shows a prompt asking whether to join the network. The user taps Connect, and the phone handles the rest. The password is stored in the device's saved networks, so it reconnects automatically on future visits. One detail that trips people up: the SSID and password are case-sensitive. 'MyWiFi' and 'mywifi' are different networks. Copy the SSID exactly as it appears in your router settings. Spaces are allowed in both the SSID and password, and they are preserved as-is.
WPA2 vs WPA3: Which Security Protocol to Use
WPA2 has been the standard WiFi security protocol since 2004 and works with virtually every device made in the last 15 years. WPA3, introduced in 2018, adds stronger encryption and protects against offline password guessing attacks. For QR code purposes, both use the same T:WPA value in the WiFi string format. The device and router negotiate the actual protocol version during connection. If your router supports WPA3, devices that understand it will use it automatically, while older devices fall back to WPA2. This mode is usually called WPA2/WPA3 Transitional or WPA3 Transition in router settings. For a guest network in a cafe, hotel, or office, WPA2 is perfectly adequate. The password is already shared openly via the QR code, so the encryption mainly prevents eavesdropping between devices on the same network rather than controlling access. WPA3's real advantage is in personal and enterprise networks where the password is meant to be private. If your router supports WPA3, enable WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode to get the security benefits for newer devices without breaking compatibility with older ones.
Guest Network Best Practices
Never share your primary WiFi network via QR code. Set up a separate guest network on your router and share that instead. A guest network isolates visitors from your main network, which means they cannot see your computers, printers, NAS drives, or smart home devices. Most consumer routers and all business-grade access points support guest network isolation. In your router settings, enable client isolation (also called AP isolation or station isolation). This prevents devices on the guest network from communicating with each other, not just with your main network. Without client isolation, one guest device could potentially sniff traffic from another. Set a bandwidth limit on the guest network. If you run a cafe with 50 Mbps download speed, limit the guest network to 20-30 Mbps so your POS system and business operations always have bandwidth available. Some routers let you limit per-client bandwidth too, which prevents one person streaming video from hogging the connection. Consider changing the guest password on a schedule (monthly is common for businesses) and reprinting your QR code. This manages the number of devices with saved credentials and keeps your network tidy.
Troubleshooting WiFi QR Scan Failures
The most common problem is a mismatch between the QR code content and the actual router settings. If the SSID in the code does not exactly match the router (including capitalization and spaces), the phone will try to connect to a network that does not exist. Similarly, if you changed your WiFi password but did not regenerate the QR code, the scan will connect but authentication will fail silently on most devices. Hidden networks add another layer. If your network is hidden and you set H:true in the QR code, the phone sends a probe request with that SSID. This works on most modern phones, but some older Android devices do not support connecting to hidden networks via QR code. If users report problems, consider making the network visible. Special characters in passwords can also cause issues. Semicolons, colons, and backslashes have special meaning in the WiFi QR format and need to be escaped with a backslash.
